3rd year recruitment for IBD in Toronto
Havent really seen too many threads on here about what the recuitment process is like in Toronto and what steps people have took to best position themselves going into 3rd year recruiting season. Would love if some of you could share some insight.
Thanks
I dont know about summer recruiting but for co-op recruiting, it's usually like three months before your co-op term is supposed to start. For someone planning on doing a work term in Fall (starting September), the interview process would be somewhere between end of May to mid June. One thing that I am not sure a lot of people know is that each bank would have a 'recruiting captain' for each school, and its better if you find out who that is from the start and reach out to them. Networking is your best bet in my opinion. Reaching out to bankers, both alumni from my school or other schools, has taught me a good deal about what to expect from the interview process, the work, and about perks of working for one bank versus another.
Full disclosure: I am merely a student in the same position as you who has been reaching out to people for the past 3 months, and is basically sharing a summary of what I learned during that time.
I agree with what LetMeBeABanker said, I've been networking and speaking to professionals for a month now. Just to get insight into the various banks and their summer programs for investment banking. That and most of them are kind enough to offer to connect me with higher ups. Attending a non-target school makes it hard to find internships. If you reach out to alumni, I found that they're much more willing to help you and even forward you to HR.
I concur. I have done plenty of networking myself with AM guys and others in industries that were more attainable to get a 2nd year summer in. Planning on starting to network with IB guys once I start work on May 1. Luckily, Ill be downtown so shouldn't be a problem to squeak out a few lunches a week..
Do these recruiting captains tend to be analysts or associates?
Have you been finding out who these captains are through other analysts youve talked to, or upper years who have already been through the entire recruitment process?
Not sure. Could be either. The ones I know of are associates though.
If an analyst/associate likes you and is willing to vouch for you in front of that captain, then yes, they might refer you to them. Networking is a tough game imo. I have been networking as much as I could manage but even at this stage I am not sure if I can even get a first-round interview lol
This was decent quality: http://www.qfac.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/QFAC-Recruiting-Guide.pdf
Summer recruiting is pretty standard and typical to what you see on here about the US. Majority of SAs are from Canadian target schools. Recruiters from the main 5 Canadian banks go to the target campuses, host networking events, then shortlist candidates for the interview process
