Advice for MBA Summer Associate Recruiting this Fall?

Typically the networking phase is in person and consists of coffee chats etc. Given those will likely just be phone calls/ zoom calls this Fall - what are some general tips/ advice for developing rapport/ good relationships with teams?

Your approach will definitely be dependent on whether or not you go to a target school. Because of covid, a lot of recruiting will be done virtually this year so it’ll be quite different from previous years. However, if you go to a target school (e.g. CBS, Wharton, etc) the process will likely be driven by the campus career center. Generally, there are points of contacts (alums) who you will need to network with, you usually don’t have to reach out to anyone else (some banks actually discourage it).

If you are from a non-target, I say it will be even more difficult this year because you can’t fly out to whatever city you want to work in and grab coffee with bankers and try to build rapport. If you are in this situation, really try to connect with alums that have gone into banking so they’ll vouch for you.

Gotcha. I’d just try to keep it casual. Ask them what their favorite experience during their time at b school was. Acknowledge that hopefully once covid is over you’ll get to do it. Ask for advice on what they would’ve dove differently if they had to go through recruiting again (e.g. what resources on campus, classes, clubs, etc). If all else fails, ask them how their wfh experience has been. What do they do with their downtime like waiting for comments etc. The main goal is to try to come off as personable as possible to seem like you’d be a cool person to work with. Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
