I am currently in OPS division at GS. Would love to know the possibility of ever making it to FO?
Ive been going through the forum and I know most of you have said OPS is a dead-end. Have any of you done it internally? or did you have to interview at another bank to do this?
Network your ass off. Be the top performer in ops. Have a coherent/believable story on why you want to make the move and why you think you can handle the job. Find a FO group that is complimentary to your ops role if possible (usually that means the LOB that you support in ops). And again, NETWORK.
If you strike out, hope you can get into an MBA program at one of the targets for IB.
I interned in a BO role and then landed a FT role in IB. Probably a bit different than your situation since you’re full time already, but it’s not impossible.
May also be easier for you to go to a smaller/less competitive bank for FO roles or even get an MBA if feasible.
I've moved from an ops program at my BB to a Corporate Banking role. Idt Goldman has a CB, but I think it's possible to lateral over depending on what you're doing right now and how well you can network/tell your story. Like the other posts said, there's still staffing shortages across the street so now would be as good a time as any to try and make the jump. FWIW, I've seen job postings on LinkedIn for GS specifically for internal candidates to switch into IB so it's definitely doable if IB is what you're looking at.
Out of undergrad I landed a $20 an hour insurance operations job. After applying to everything and everywhere landed another operations job within Prime brokerage at a BB. I made sure I was THE TOP performer at both of those gigs. While at the BB, I networked my ass off and continued to apply to every S&T and every IB role I saw on LinkedIn. A year later I was able to land some interviews for a S&T role which got me referred for a IB role. It’s possible and it will take time. Just keep on networking as much as you can. Find someone within your current bank if possible who is in FO, someone you can connect with..ie. school, veteran or what ever you have that can have you both connect. Ask for mentorship. I literally for 2 years out of college kept repeating wolf of wall street in my head “gf thinks your are a loser?..pick up the phone and start dialing!” Network, network and make sure to be the best at what ever role you are currently in. People will take notice and that will help you in interviews. Dont give up, people will tell you to settle and other like that first comment will say it won’t happen. It takes time, be patient and be ready when that opportunity comes.
Went from a BO/MO rotational program at a BB directly to FO IB (ECM) at a lower ranked bank, but have since left the industry after 5 years...feel free to DM me
I did it but I’m not going to pretend there’s a formula or someone can replicate in the exact same way. Basically had an Ops internship but had been interested in Markets for months prior and had done a lot of work ahead to potentially network.
I got lucky with my networking and managed to get Superday with same person I networked with and got an internship again in FO and the rest is history. A lot of this is luck and timing but you have to work your ass off to make sure if that you do get an opportunity you’re ready.
Nice mate. There was some good luck into this, haha. Glad to know you made it to where you want to be! Hopefully, i'll be able to follow into this path
Lots of traders from MO at the BB (top 3) I work at. Heck, I think all the associates hires on the d1 desk last year in my region were from MO. Standard advice applies. Be a top performer and network.
Internal movement at GS from OPS to FO is impossible and highly frowned upon. Managers in OPS have chips on their shoulders and will give you bad reviews and eventually fire you if you make an internal application to a FO role. Glassdoor will corroborate this. Believe it or not, ops at gs is filled with hardos that will brag to everyone about their firm. Hours also suck in ops at GS.
Your best bet is to apply everywhere. Passing at least 1 level of the CFA program will be helpful to show you have basic knowledge of finance (level 1 is more than enough for banking and probably puts your knowledge level above many employees who are working as analysts).

Hi greatpyranees65, no, I never sleep and so I can respond to any lonely threads (like this one) at all hours of the night. Impressive, I know ;-)
More suggestions...
You're welcome.
It’s literally never happened. No one from operations has ever made it to IB or S&T
The WSO podcast has several stories of people doing this.

Thank you for this response mate!
People are doing it now more than ever because of staffing shortages

Happy to also answer any questions via DM also
Thanks for your response mate! I'm not able to message you via dm, but I'd like to.

Doing an MBA, BO -> EB. Would recommend.
Will look into this, thank you!
