Are Low Returns Due to Incompetence or Job Market

Failed to get a return this summer from my top MM in NY. Seems like a pretty common outcome across the street. Just curious if the full-timers attribute this low return rate to widespread incompetence, a poor job market, or both?

Funny how it could be a poor job market when almost all banks posted incredible earnings. Maybe a combination of AI efficiency and iffy interns
