Aspiring Tech M&A Banker Studying in Boston Wants to Recruit to West Coast but is Stupid and Needs Advice
Hello everybody,
I am a freshman studying at Northeastern who is set on Tech M&A banking (I know many are thinking, "that's a super non-target and you shouldn't even try to recruit into IB you'll be lucky to get any job after college going to that shitty university." Please spare me that I've heard that from everybody including my parents). Anyways, I'm originally from the Silicon Valley in California and want to go work for a top Tech M&A team like Q, GS TMT, MS Menlo, EVR Menlo, Lazard SF, Moelis SF, you get the idea. I am studying cs/finance, networking with bankers in the bay, am currently reading Rosenbaum and Pearl's Investment Banking textbook, and am teaching myself financial modeling via youtube. I understand that my chances of breaking into IB got fucked when Wharton and Stern waitlisted and then ghosted me like that one girl I really liked, but does anybody have any advice for how I can maximize my chances of breaking into one of the firms listed above? And please forgive me, for I know so little about the recruitment process, but am I stupid for focusing all of my networking efforts to people who work in the bay where I want to work? Should I be focusing on firms in New York or Boston that are closer to me, or does it not matter which location I choose as long as I am able to make the flight for superday? (And yes it is only if I am lucky to get one superday considering I go to a shitty fucking university hahahahah so fucking funny shit on the stupid 18 year old for getting waitlisted from Stern and Wharton and still thinking he has a chance at this career). Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you and sorry for my shitty attitude I understand it is childish I just really want to make it so I never have to worry about looking at prices and saving money again.
If you want to work in a specific location you have to network with bankers from that location, if SF is the goal lock in that, NYC networking likely wont do much if anything from my experience
Northeastern is a good school, and I think you have a good reason why you want to work in SF. However, I think it will be better for you to network with alums since there aren't many Northeastern people on the street, regardless of the location/sector.You can always lateral once you break in.
