Aus uni student wants to intern in HK,,.

Hi, I've currently finished my 2nd year of BCom(Finance)/LLB (aussie version of ur JD) from one of Aus top uni's and am currently very interested in moving to HK for IB. My grades and ec's are fine for IB in Aus (D avg with quite a list of ec's). Cantonese is fine, but still learning mandarin.

My questions are..
When do HK IB's hire interns (both in terms of hiring periods and the actual period of employment)?

In Aus, many of our uni's are using WAM's (Weighted Average Mark) instead of GPA. Is there a method to convert this? My friend from a uni that uses GPA says that 2=Pass, 3=Credit, 4=D and HD - would that be correct? If so, would 3.75 be sufficient? (I have no idea how competitive it is to land an internship in Asia)

Any students from non-Asian countries whom have gone abroad to Asia (esp. HK) for IB and would like to share their experiences would are welcome.

Cheers.

You should apply for Asia summer internships before the end of December. The period of employment is generally 8-10 weeks during the summer; starting dates vary by firm, but most will probably be in June.

I wouldn't convert the GPA - it's almost impossible to convert across institutions and a 3.75 conversion seems a bit high anyway. The people in charge of recruiting are more than familiar with all types of grading systems.

Also, your system is wrong 2=barely passing, 3=average, 3.5=average for ibanking, 4=perfect (not a single less-than-perfect mark throughout your entire academic career). According to Wikipedia, a D is 75%-84%; at my school, 75% is probably around a 3.5-3.55 and 84% is probably around a 3.65-3.7

Thanks for clarifying that. The period of employment for interns in Australia is from the beginning of December through to February as that is our long break. Is there any way of going to HK over that period or are they strictly in the June-August time period? I have exams in June and my holidays in July are barely enough.

When the banks come to uni for recruiting, those that are recruiting for HK/Asia will come along with the Australian team. This is usually in the month of March - April. Applications are due slightly later than the Australian divisions, and so are interviews. I remember CS and MS recruiting for HK in Sem 1 at my uni, as well as DB (S&T) and UBS opening applications for HK interns in around mid-September.

b's advice is incorrect for Australian students applying to Asia, as it's on a different cycle to the US recruitment. Summers to Asia from Australian unis will be over out summer break from Dec - Feb.

Also, a GPA grade of 4 is definitely not a D grade. As long as your WAM is >80% you should be ok there and at least get called for first round interviews.

Wow, I wouldn't mind having 79/80 as the cut-off point for D/HD.

There are less than a handful of crazy people that I know with either HD avg (85+) or close to it as a combined WAM for comm/law but whether they have work or ec's is another matter.

Need I remind you there is less than a handful of jobs going for SA/FT in asia/pac (nothing close to the levels of NYC/London), and there are multiple unis with a handful of top students. EC's fall way down on the list of must haves, they are not as critical as in the states.

WAM's and letter grades are fairly much meaningless across institutions. Everyone has a slightly different ranking system, target average mark and spread.

Are you going for Asia yourself?
