Background Check on Scam Company

Hello everyone, I recently got accepted to a BB bank and I could not be more excited. I read online that background checks can be incredibly thorough. The issue is I contributed to a scam company called New York International Capital. It was an unpaid internship, but work was given to us and it was actually quite frequent even though the internship was remote. I put it on my resume, but it was not even brought up during the interview because it was throughout my freshman year and my future accomplishments overshadow it. Recently, people who I know who also worked there showed me this daily news article that stated (I can't post links for some reason)

*"A Manhattan man shamelessly tried to scam $20 million from a federal relief program for small businesses impacted by coronavirus, falsely claiming he had hundreds of employees when in reality he had none, prosecutors charged Thursday.

Muge Ma filed paperwork with the Small Business Administration stating he paid millions in salaries to employees of New York International Capital LLC and Hurley Human Resources. The websites of the shady companies feature confusing boasts of global reach.

“NYIC is a patriotic American Management Consulting firm headquartered in Manhattan, New York City. Since NYIC is COMPLETELY OPERATING IN THE CLOUD, NYIC has the unique ability to deploy HUNDREDS of brilliant, hard-working & passionate young people of NYIC ALL dedicated to YOUR project connecting you with 10,000+ CHIEF EXECUTIVES of the world’s 10,000+ BLUE-CHIPs as your strategic partners in the speed of light,” the New York International Capital site reads.

"HURLEY HR is a global human resources consulting firm with its global headquarters in Manhattan, New York City,” the Hurley site reads.

“Getting American White-Collar Workers CLOUD-BASED Jobs Domestic and Overseas.”

The companies’ addresses are on the sixth floor of the luxury condo building where Ma lives, according to prosecutors.*

It turns out the work was just bogus and he was profiting off of having a fake company. Should I reach out to HR about this WAY before background checks even start?

While the company seemed very fishy the work they gave and the fact that it had so many interns, it has 93 interns the same age as me, made it believable. Did I mess up?

You're not involved in any legal action so I don't imagine you're going to get your offer pulled, but I would reach out to HR so that they are aware when they try to contact NYIC who most likely will not respond. I worked freshman year at a legit, but poorly run place part-time and internships have had trouble contacting the firm. So I always tell HR the situation and give them my boss's direct contact to get around the shitty infrastructure upstream. For you I would offer any legal documents like a contract you signed just as proof you didn't lie on your work history which is what I believe they care about.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing! The issue is the HR company (which made the scam seem more legit) is also FAKE and created by this guy. I have the emails and work that shows I worked there but there was never an offer letter as it was unpaid

Not sure... The BB background checks are INTENSE. Literally will comb through everything to make sure you didnt lie on the resume. For instance, they will make you get finger printed to see your criminal history. Is the company completely gone now? Is it still even a company. If so, then you are fine. You are not tied to it at all. However, if it is completely deleted off the face of the planet it will def come up so you should disclose to HR. Either way, you will be fine. Not your fault at all just a matter of explaining, so dont trip out
