BB Background Check - GPA

When applying to firms in July, I included my expected fall semester in calculating my GPA. I had around a 3.35 but with the fall semester included(assuming I did well, which I did), now have a current GPA of 3.5 which is what I listed on my resume/application. Got an offer at a top BB/EB and now wondering if this is something that HR would care about during background checks/transcript check?

I did so to get past the 3.5 cutoff and technically did not lie since it is now my current GPA. Should I be worried?

Technically, you lied. That's exactly the kind of behavior that produces rogue traders every once in a while. The fact that you're thinking this way before you have even begun your career is truly concerning. If you were at our firm and someone noticed it, you will be flagged and your offer will be rescinded. Having that said, if you haven't submitted your transcripts already, I can't think of any possible way your HR/Compliance would find out. It is not like they ask for GPA as of the end of each semester.

Who are you - the Pope? Dude's not applying to be the President...chill out. Our industry probably has a higher concentration of lying dipsh*ts than any other (except maybe Consultants); a little GPA bump is nothing. Not all of us were in our dorms jerkin' off and hitting the books all day.

You should be fine. don’t listen to the softies coming at your moral character over a .2 gpa swing.

WTF? You lied bro. The bank has all the rights and grounds to fire your ass. What do you mean you technically didn't lie? lmao. Never tell anyone on your firm or even your family and significant other.

Yeah at that moment you DID lie. If they asked for transcript immediately in July you would’ve been fucked. Lucky you banks are notoriously slow for background checks and you got lucky that your current GPA checks out. Bank checks now and the numbers tie do they don’t care - have fun dealing with one more black mark on your soul for lying though

Tbh, I took a calculated risk because I knew that having a sub 3.5 would automatically ding me at the top banks. I knew that coming into the semester I had to perform and work hard to get to the 3.5 listed, and did just that. However, if I had failed to do so I dont know what I would have done. In my mind this was a grey area and didn't go against my morals as I truly do have a 3.5 as of when they check my transcript but completely lying and doctoring transcripts is not something I would do nor support.

I come from a non-target school and fucked up my gpa first semester, sub 2.5, due to poor time management and poor judgment of priorities supplemented by a family member being very sick. 100% take responsibility for my actions and have since had a cumulative 3.8 gpa the remaining semesters. I don't believe that my first semester should define my career as I know I am capable of doing the work and have worked extremely hard to prove it through multiple internships in IB before junior year. I know some people are gonna question my character but I feel I did what I had to do without entirely crossing my morals.

Holy shit. Another psychopath who thinks he's done nothing wrong and that he's just a hustler who's merely had a bet that paid off. Morally/ethically bankrupt even before graduating from college! OP, I get a feeling that you're gonna be incredibly successful in finance.

Bro, thats no different than someone getting a 2.5 in their first year of college and listing their GPA as a 3.6 assuming they get a 4.0 the next 3 years. There is an obvious difference in magnitude, but no substantive difference at the end of the day. You lied and I hope you face the music for something like this.

Funniest

Well, I passed every background check without a hitch and will be working at a top EB/BB in a top group so I think I won't be facing anything. See ya!

Bump man, did something similar except mine actual was way worse. Did they ever check your GPA?

This is for SA

fuck me, i see this shit all the time on WSO - just stop lying / adjusting ur GPA. Either put in the work to get good grades, or fucking own up to it. You make the bed you sleep in it

I know, I mean i have the actual GPA now. I just didn't when I applied but was fairly confident I would meet it. sometimes these rich kids who get a job bc of Daddy's money think that everyone has it easy. pisses me off. I know it was wrong but it was either or making minimum wage like the rest of my family
