BB Background Check: GPA Issue - Advise Needed

Hi Community,

I have always been a silent reader here but now my first post, which is very serious for me. I am going nuts at home and would appreciate every piece of advise/knowledge.

Last year I did a summer internship at a BB in NY. I successfully converted to a FT-position and I will start as an analyst soon.

When I applied for a summer intern position I had a GPA of 3.7, which worsened now to 3.6, which is also my cumulative GPA of my degree. However, in my last term there were two exams, which I didn't attend on the first try and took the exam during the re-sit (I didn't fail it, I just didn't attend it). I passed the exam with an excellent grade, but the problem is my university's method of calculating my GPA. They use the weighted average ((grade x credit)/sum of credits) but for any exam taken in a re-sit session they insert a "0" into the formula, which means my GPA is 3.3 according to my Uni's calculation instead of 3.6, which would be the usual weighted average.

Three weeks ago my employer asked me to submit my most recent CV, which still includes the 3.6 GPA. It isn't a lie but it is also not calculated the way my uni would do it and now I am really afraid they will find out. My employer didn't ask for my official transcript/degree yet but that might change (no GPA is on it and if they calculate the weighted average 3.6 would be the result).

I am really afraid if they will fire me if they find out when they will conduct background checks and contact my university. However, my uni might not disclose the GPA since it isn't stated on any document.

What are your thoughts on this? I also can't understand my university's stupid way of calculating the GPA. It is just BS in my opinion..

Note: My university does not state my GPA on my transcript of records nor on my official degree certificate.

I think you should be fine don’t worry. As far as I know universities don’t publish your GPA during a background check and your employer requires your official transcript your grades indicate that 3.6 is obviously not a lie.

My Uni had a similar policy for GPA calculation and they stated that it is for internal purposes only. According to them students who take the exam at the first try should be rewarded. Did you contacted them and explained the situation? Maybe they can issue a certificate stating your weighted average GPA, which then will be 3.6.
