BG CHECK HELP!

so, a couple of years ago i was charged with a "theft of service" ($2.00) because i swiped my friend into the NYC subway (in the turnstiles). i didn't have any ID on me, and due to crazy NYC law, I had to go to jail until fingerprints identified me. i dont recall what my offense was - but i believe it was a class c misd. Does this need to be disclosed? What about a littering ticket I paid? is this a huge deal?

yes, i know. are speeding tickets considered minor traffic violations or are those simply parking tickets etc? any input about the class c misd? will it get my offer pulled???

I'm pretty sure that unless you had to go to court for it, they don't care. I'm filling out my BG Check info right now, and all it asks for is things like the docket number in the event that you were convicted of a felony/misdemeanor. I've got a disorderly conduct citation on my record, which I was told by the Clerk of Courts is just a "civil infraction", not a misdemeanor. I also never went to court for it, so I'm not planning on listing it either. Does anybody know which banks throw hardball BG Checks at their SA's? I've heard everybody gets grilled for full-time, but some don't go very deep on the SA BG Checks.

well, i did go to court for both littering and the subway service incident. could someone give me input as to whether this is a deal breaker? will they rescind the offer?? its a SA gig and i know my bank doesnt do bg checks (hr actually told me), but i care for FT employment if i get an offer.. PLEASE HELP! im really worried.

First of all, calm down.

None of the things you have listed are serious offenses, and I cannot see your offer being revoked for something like this, especially if you prove yourself over the summer. But just to be on the safe side, I would disclose the ones where you were arrested or taken to court(since those are most likely to show up). I wouldn't worry about the speeding tickets. However, I wouldn't disclose anything until after the summer when they start the BG check on you.

Based on the fact that you said your bank doesn't do BG checks for SAs, I'm going to assume it is a boutique/MM. Typically, these firms aren't as exhaustive in their checks, and tend to check the bare minimum (criminal, credit, verification).

You shouldn't worry about getting your offer revoked. I have had friends disclose worse offenses without any penalties.

Along similar lines...when I was 19 I was speeding in my car and got pulled over. It happened to be poker night and I was DD--which meant I had one beer. When I got pulled over my car wreaked like alcohol because my friends were wasted. So when I got breathalyzed I blew a .06, which is below the legal limit in CA (.08), but since I was under 21, I got what they call a "wet reckless." It's a not a misdemeanor, its an infraction. However, because I was drinking and under 21, my license was suspended for a year. I got it back a year ago, but I'm starting to worry about my offer for the summer at a bb. So I don't have a criminal record or anything, but will this come up on the BG check? Should I be worried? Since it isn't a crime and technically considered a traffic infraction, I didn't disclose it. Should I have? Should I email HR?

I would disclose this to your HR contact, but wouldn't worry about it. Just tell them you didn't list it since it wasn't criminal, but just wanted to make sure you were in the clear. Not something they would revoke your offer over, especially since it isn't even a misdemeanor.

I have had friends charged with alcohol related misdemeanors pass the checks fine, so I don't think you would have any problems.

No, I am at BB. Also, what do you disclose it after the summer? You think I should lie during the onboarding and say no to the offenses question?

Honestly, I feel like I have to tell the truth if I'm supposed to. I'm ethical and simply want to know if I should be extremely stressed about this. How should I phrase this in the "explain" box? I don't want my character hit, as I strongly value my integrity.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying.

If they give you ANY room to disclose anything, I would list everything. I was under the impression that they didn't ask you to disclose anything until after the summer.

NEVER EVER lie about anything during this process.

If you are filling things out now, definitely list everything.

So am I screwed here? Is there anything I can do now (i.e. email HR and tell them I forgot to disclose that incident)?

So list the speeding tickets etc? How should I phrase what happened with the subway "theft"? Should i go into details? Im so fucking worried/stressed.

I don't think speeding tickets are a "criminal offense", but I'm not the right person to ask. I would actually ask HR about that. I would assume they don't care about that, but you never know.

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. None of your "offenses" seem to be bad. The subway thing seems like it could happen to anyone. If it was me, I would talk to someone working at your bank (an analyst you know, etc.) and see what they think. When I was going through the BG check, HR would tell me to disclose anything and everything, but you should definitely use judgment.

If it were me, I would probably list everything, since nothing you've said so far seems like something that would cause them to doubt your character/integrity.

i should clarify: when i say i "swiped my friend", i mean we swiped once and both went through the turnstile (the tall ones).
