Boutique IB internship - Do I have a chance for FT IB next year?
Hey WSO members, I've been feeling really down for the past week or so. Please bare with me throughout this story. When I first started applying for SA positions this summer, I was so happy when I got an interview with a boutique bank at my hometown(New York). When I went in for an interview, I found out that they were actually looking for people to join the consulting part of the group at the boutique bank. I still accepted because I knew that I had to gain experience no matter what. I started working at the boutique bank part-time because I had also accepted a part-time offer from a BB PWM group because their deadline was earlier and I decided to do two internships throughout the summer.
Throughout this summer, I've been working my ass off during both my internships to show my that I really have a passion for what I do. I stay in the office later then all the other interns and I complete as much work as I can to the best of my abilities at the boutique bank. Most of the work responsibilities are data collection, market research, due diligence, but nothing related to the IB side of the boutique bank. There are 2 other interns I work with at the moment and even though they are considered the "consulting" interns, they seem to get a lot of IB work. I know what most people are thinking, "you're part-time, so of course you get the shit work". The worst part is that the other interns are part-time too. I've tried asking for more IB related tasks and tried asking to help out but I always seem to get shut down. I've worked really really hard to get to where I am and I just feel disheartened that I'm not able to help with the IB side of the bank. I feel like not many people has had many experiences from where I'm coming. What has made me feel even more disgruntled is the fact that one of the VPs client's son came in to work 2-3 weeks ago and they have already placed him on the IB side. I'm just not sure what to do...
Will it look bad that I don't have any deal experience or even pitchbook experience during my time at the boutique bank when I put down job duties on my resume?
Should I study for the CFA or complete a self-study financial modeling course to show that I really have a passion to learn when FT recruiting starts?
Thanks for listening.
