Brushing up on financial modeling skills
So I'm starting a new job within IB in a couple of weeks after almost a year away from any financial modeling experience. What are some online tutorials that I can purchase and go over in only a couple of weeks to really fine tune my skills?
Thanks.
get training the street. Its cheap and will get the job done for your purposes. As someone who is trying to transitioning into IB, what were you doing before this came up.
I've been at a tech consulting start-up for the past half year. Before that I was in school where I took financial modeling coursework and also interned as a financial analyst at a law firm doing some financial modeling. It's essentially an IB analyst position, but other candidates had one to two years experience, so I would love to catch up in the next few weeks.
I would suggest FactSet's DealMaven. The only downside is the subscription expires. But, it definitely gives you on-hands modeling experience.
*Double post sorry.
How to beef up Financial Modeling skills (Originally Posted: 05/22/2012)
Hi all,
Mind sharing with me what would be the best way to learn financial modeling. Currently, I have minimal exposure as I'm working in the Capital Markets side. Am planning to beef up my skills.
In terms of basic financial modeling (Basic linkage of 3 Financial Statements), I am pretty comfortable with it. I am just wondering how do I get more exposure if there are more complicated scenarios (debt drawdown, consolidating financial statements of multiple companies, IRR bridge etc)
I've been reading the book by Joshua Rosenbaum. It's a good book but I believe it's more on the fundamentals and doesn't really drill down to the more difficult bit.
Appreciate your thoughts on this and I do want a proper exposure on this.
Thanks so much!
Oh, I don't know? Try using the search feature, or click on the big button up top labeled "Modeling" ?
You can always get Breaking Into Wall Street. They have an advanced modeling course that is pretty good.
Valuation for mergers, buyouts and restructuring - enrique arzac. do it. now.
Modeling Skills (Originally Posted: 05/05/2013)
Hi,
I'm planning on self-learning financial accounting this summer and teaching myself DCF and modeling. I've looked at the damodaran and macabacus websites and they both seem pretty detailed (please correct me if I'm wrong). Could anyone tell me the most general and useful topics I should focus on?
Thanks in advance.
Also interested to hear responses.
Same
I'm reading the Rosenbaum book, seems like many have recommended that
Damodaran's book is great as well as The Interpretation of Financial Statements.
I am also interested.
Why the hell do you guys have so many banana points and don't even know how to model
How is that relevant?
hahahaha gold but seriously, i agree with him
Macabacus - in my opinion is probably too basic, but it'll teach you the basic concepts of a DCF
Damodaran - while good is pretty simplistic in its approach (in a good way)
I always felt that Rosenbaum's book and models provided a decent starting point for those looking to learn how to model. It is fairly detailed but should give you a good introduction to some of the finer points of valuation - calculating diluted shares outstanding, calenderization, etc.
But before learning how to model, learn some accounting. If you get your accounting down pat, modeling will come easier.
