Canada MM M&A vs Big 4 FDD

Hi everyone,

Thanks for stopping by. I’m currently at a career pivot point and looking to move out of audit, with the long-term goal of breaking into investment banking and eventually potentially PE in Asia before my 30s.

I currently have two offers:

  1. Middle-market M&A in Canada
  2. Big 4 Transaction Services / FDD in Asia

I understand that moving directly from audit into a BB IBD role is difficult, so I’m trying to decide which of these two paths would give me the strongest positioning for a later lateral into IBD.

The MM M&A role would give me direct transaction experience across the deal process. Based on the JD and my conversations with the team, I would be involved in areas such as transaction execution, financial analysis and valuation, client interaction, preparing teasers and marketing materials, due diligence, and supporting deals from start to finish. The work seems much closer to what an IBD analyst would actually do, but my concern is that the firm has relatively limited brand recognition in Asia.

The Big 4 FDD role, on the other hand, has much stronger brand recognition in Asia and would put me directly into the local deal ecosystem. From what I’ve read, FDD is also one of the more common Big 4 routes into investment banking. However, the actual work seems less directly comparable to IBD, with more emphasis on QoE, working capital, financial due diligence and accounting analysis rather than valuation, pitching and transaction execution.

If my end goal is IBD in Asia in the next few years, which path would you consider stronger?

Would you prioritize:

  • Direct M&A execution experience, even from a lesser-known MM firm; or
  • Big 4 FDD experience in the market where I eventually want to work, with stronger brand recognition and local deal exposure?

I’d especially appreciate insights from anyone who has made the Big 4 → IBD or MM M&A → IBD transition in Asia.

Hey yes! I know FDD isn’t IBD but rather part of the process. I just want to see which route to go so it can be slightly easier to break into IBD! Thanks
