Career path in IB standard for everyone?
In one of the recent posts on one of the IB related reddit pages, someone asked how long does it take typically to get to an MD role. One of the responses with quite a few upvotes (and that I have seen in numerous other places as well) was that the typical progression is 2-3 years analyst (150-200k) ; 2-3 years associate (200-300k) ; 2-3 years VP (idk the numbers but must be 300k+) ; 2-3 years director.
Does every one get through with such a career progression or is it only a tiny section of people who can make it past the associate level to VP? I’m a CS sophomore in a non target who sometimes thinks about exploring IB as a potential career path too. Quite a few friends of mine are going into IB. When I ask them why they chose IB, they say that 1. Because the career progression is very standard and pretty much set 2. High salary 3. Exit opp. after the intensive and stressful IB work into something relatively less stressful perhaps PE or HF (can’t remember exactly which)
This sometimes makes me rethink about my career choice in CS and makes me want to go to IB, especially if the progression is so much more standard and a big section of people end up going into senior roles eventually. In CS (rather software engg) it is quite unlikely that one would make it to such a senior level, especially if working in one of the big tech companies. If it really is that IB is so much more standardised in terms of career progression, then wouldn’t more people want to get into IB than software engg or something? At the end of the day most people want high salaries and stable progress.
I know I must have made some technical errors above while talking about the things related to IB, so please bear with me. I hope I was able to convey my thought process. Please let me know what you think of it, if what I said was right, or If I’m just having a case of “grass is greener on the other side”. Also, I am aware that since I am posting on WSO, many answers might be biased. However, the purpose of me asking this question here is to get a more informative opinion from someone who has been in the industry for some time at least and is not just another student like me and my friends. Thank you!

Also wondering how many people reach VP/MD without an MBA? Have seen a lot about this and seems that more people are starting to say MBA isn't really worth it anymore unless you are making a career change.
One of my VP's has been at that level for over 5 years, and have seen an aso wait 4 years before getting the VP promote. Granted that's not normal by any means, but its not as rigid as you'd think and really comes down to performance. If you suck, you will get laid off. If you're okay, it might take you longer to get promoted and you might get "stuck" at VP or Director.
