Citigroup - Why is everyone ranking this firm 4th or 5th?
Why is everyone ranking Citigroup in 4th- 5th place, look at the league tables its number 2 worldwide for M&A, number 1 Global Debt and Equity, and number 2 for Global Loans. People why is everyone not recognizing this firm for what it is?
I think part of the perception is due to factors beyond pure banking. Citi, overall, is a mess now. The leadership has been messing up consistently in a very blatant fashion. They haven't been able to absord some of their acquistions well. etc. All this factors in when discussing a bank and its long-term prospects.
I agree Anacot. I place Citi up there with GS & MS, but I've heard people rank it lower because it isn't purely an investment bank. Every bank has its scandals, but when it comes to deal flow and market share, Citi is def top tier.
Citi is a clear #3 behind GS and MS in that order. Ahead of LEH, CSFB, ML, UBS, etc.
ExGSBanker, why do you put Citi at #3 even though a lot of people say it's not as good as Lehman, ML, etc?

will people ever figure out that you can't rank banks in a neat 1-10 order? ever?
They all have strengths and weaknesses and after GS/MS, they're all equally prestigious at the end of the day. You could ask 100 different people on the street to rank the top 10 banks and you'd get 100 different rankings. Give up already!
