Columbia in IB
Ignore title. Incoming freshman and interested in Columbia in IB and PE.
What banks and groups have the best Columbia representation? Are alums helpful during networking and do they have school pride like other Ivies? Know that GS is big, unsure on EBs
Do you have to be in finance clubs to recruit well like Stern/Wharton? If so, what are the best clubs?
Any students go directly to the buyside and is there a pipeline like Wharton for Warburg, Silver Lake Partners, Bain, BX, KKR, Charlesbank etc.
Barclays has a few alums
what about other banks? is it a top feeder similar to penn or viewed as a tier below?
how does it compare to dartmouth duke chicago
PM me
Rabobank is big on lions
i heard UBS take a couple TOP TOP notch candidates each year
the prestigious tech group in particular only takes kids who are in the sigma ligma bigma frat
I've been graduated long enough for most of my CU friends to have left banking unless they want MD/are moving on from their PE jobs post banking/going to or wrapping up biz school.
I know people who did straight PE/HF/VC after college. There's essentially no bank/fund you kids on this forum salivate over that doesn't recruit from Columbia, or, won't hire you because you went there.
It's been a few years, but GS/EVR/MS all pretty big when I was there. CFIG sent a lot of kids to MS from memory, maybe it's different now. Knew multiple HL/BofA/JPM/MOE/CVP/Jeff/PJT kids from my year. Some were in clubs, others weren't.
every MBB recruited there and probably have 10 legit friends who worked/work there currently.
Quite literally everyone recruits from Columbia kid. There are maybe 5 schools in the country that people would realistically rate over us for finance. HYPW are clear. And even then, i don't think i've come across more princeton alum on the street vs columbia, although it's a better school. Stanford and MIT are clear too but i've just not seen that many alum on the street vs columbia on the sell-side or buyside (pardon old title).
i think columbia is a bit underrated on this site. most of the harvard and wharton kids i know aren't that bright really. I've quite literally, never been impressed with my harvard UG friends/alum in my circle. they're all pretty chill while being super polished– super chill people but i never met one that blew me away. wharton kids are great at finance but i don't rate them otherwise. i always felt columbia kids to be pretty interested in learning for the sake of it, and quite literally every firm knows that. i did really enjoy going to school with, and still hanging out, with my columbia friends in the city. Be it PE VP/AI startup/HF guy/IBanker, essentially all of them all have legit views of the world and have a level of interest in what goes on with the people who live on this planet we call home. yeah, there are some crazy-haired freaks but crazy people are everywhere.
I've personally never donated a dime to columbia nor will i, but there are few schools on the planet that will set you up better for an elite career.
like look at this from the wikipedia page: As of December 2021, its alumni, faculty, and staff have included 7 of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America; 4 U.S. presidents; 34 foreign heads of state or government; 2 secretaries-general of the United Nations;10 justices of the United States Supreme Court; 103 Nobel laureates; 125 National Academy of Sciences members; 53 living billionaires; 23 Olympic medalists; 33 Academy Award winners; and 125 Pulitzer Prize recipients.
you don't need a club when the school has alum like that lol. just get above a 3.5 and you'll be fine. enjoy college and relax man. i had a blast there– good luck!
thanks for the insights and glad to hear you're still in touch with the community.
Wondering how PE placement is for Columbia grads post-banking since a lot of PE/HF recruiting is driven by prestige and with heavy HYP and Wharton. Would be great to hear some of the shops that have a Columbia pipeline / seniors vouching for Columbia alums!
I would not recommend PE straight out of college. Often does not set you up for success.
Thanks for all the responses! Does the current administration change how people would view Columbia and all the controversies the school has been through (faking rankings, politics etc.)
