Infinite possibilities and have seen people with all sorts of backgrounds get in (engineering, scientists, operations, accounting, etc). It depends on the sector of the fund, and their strategy I.e. are they true operators or is that just a marketing gimmick in their marketing materials.
IB and MC are the highest likelihood ways to get in, but there are infinite non straight line possibilities - they are just less of a sure bet.
A little bit unrelated. Can you name some examples of firms who are true operators? I'm interested after banking to move to an operator. Today, every firm says they are hands-on blah blah blah
