Do IBs look for Payslips during Background Checks?

I'm recruiting for Associate positions in IB, moving from a local growth equity fund which has performed well but flies somewhat under the radar - which is part of the issue. I'm pretty far along in a couple of processes and wondering if IBs (both EB and BB) generally request payslips from current employer during background checks?

The reason I ask is that I, perhaps regrettably, took some artistic license when providing implicit indications of my current pay package and salary expectations, which are in excess of the truth, and I am concerned that this may come to light during background checks. Likely not a major issue but could be awkward and I'd like to know what I've gotten myself in for / if I need to change my tune going forward.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about background checks and the potential request for payslips:

  1. Background Check Process:

    • Investment banks (both EB and BB) typically use third-party verification companies to conduct background checks.
    • These checks often include employment verification, which involves confirming the details provided on your resume.
  2. Payslips and Salary Verification:

    • While the primary focus is on verifying employment history and roles, some banks may request payslips to confirm salary details, especially if there are discrepancies or if salary verification is part of their standard process.
    • If you have provided inflated salary expectations, there is a risk that this could be uncovered if payslips are requested.
  3. Potential Consequences:

    • If discrepancies are found between the salary you indicated and the actual payslips, it could lead to awkward situations or even impact your candidacy.
    • It's advisable to be prepared to explain any differences or to adjust your salary expectations to align more closely with reality.
  4. Advice Moving Forward:

    • Consider being transparent about your current pay package if asked directly.
    • Focus on the value you bring to the role and your performance at the growth equity fund rather than solely on salary expectations.

In summary, while not all banks may request payslips, it is a possibility. Being prepared for this and adjusting your approach accordingly can help mitigate any potential issues.

You should be fine, from what I understand the people who need pay slips from background checks are pretty far removed from the people who were a part of your hiring process, especially if it’s a multinational IB.
