Double major?

I’m a student at a target and am currently majoring in a non Bus/ Econ major. I will be adding Econ asap but won’t be able to add it by the time of SA 26 IB applications (prob can officially add it later this semester or in junior year). I know that saying I’m an Econ major can help in recruiting and I love Econ so I wanna add it.

It’s a super easy process to add the major— u barely need approval and r basically guaranteed to get into it but I am technically not an Econ major now.

Am I allowed to say on my resume “History and Economics major?” I ask as i WILL be graduating with an econ major and my resume does say “expected 2027” so wouldn’t the inference be “expected double major in Econ and history by 2027” or can I not include Econ as I’m currently not an Econ major?

How much does having a non finance/ Econ related major hurt?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Listing Economics on Your Resume: If you are not officially declared as an Economics major yet, it is generally not advisable to list it as a current major on your resume. However, you can include something like "History Major, Economics Major (Expected 2027)" to clarify your intent and timeline. This approach is transparent and avoids any potential misrepresentation.

  2. Impact of a Non-Finance/Econ Major: Having a non-finance or non-economics major does not necessarily hurt your chances, especially if you're at a target school. Many students from diverse academic backgrounds break into finance, as long as they demonstrate a strong interest in the field through internships, relevant coursework, or extracurricular activities. That said, having an Economics major can provide an edge, as it signals analytical and quantitative skills that are valued in IB recruiting.

  3. Recruiting Without Officially Adding Econ Yet: Since you won't officially have the Economics major by the time of SA 2026 IB applications, focus on showcasing your interest in finance and economics through other means. Highlight relevant coursework, internships, or involvement in finance-related clubs. Recruiters care more about your demonstrated skills and passion for the field than the specific title of your major.

  4. Transparency is Key: Always be honest about your current academic status. Misrepresenting your major could backfire during interviews or background checks. Instead, use your resume and interviews to emphasize your commitment to adding Economics and your enthusiasm for the subject.
