drink with the team

so I am invited to have a drink/eat with a part of my new team ( 3-4 people) next week. I am just thinking is there anything that I should be aware of when talking? I meant certainly it is not as serious as an interview any more but still I guess i can't just random chitchat out there. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Billy Ray ValentineIf you are that socially awkward that you need to post on a message board to ask for topics to discuss over a beer, you have some issues.

dude I am not posting a message asking which topics should I talk over a beer, I am asking which topics should I NOT talk about first time meeting a team. At the very least, it is not a high school friends reunion. What makes you think of " socially awkward" by asking this?

Becasue common sense should tell you what is or isn't appropriate for a team outing. If you don't know this I think socially awkward...

The best conversations are the ones that happen naturally.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

"When in doubt whip it out."

^^^Always works for me, then again I do have an 11 incher.

------------------------------------------------------------------ "I just want to be a monkey of average intelligence who wears a suit. I'll go to business school!"

I would just let others start the first few conversation topics (or start with a 'safe' topic like news/sports), and from that point on you should be able to tell intuitively what is and what isn't appropriate. Stay inside the established boundaries and let others push the envelope, but don't do it yourself.

stay off politics, religion, don't use profanity, don't come across as overbearing/aggressive and don't be the guy sitting there nursing the drink without saying anything either.

smile, laugh when appropriate and chip in when you can.

Just talk about bonuses.

Still not sure if I want to spend the next 30+ years grinding away in corporate finance and the WSO dream chase or look to have enough passive income to live simply and work minimally.

Nothing is off limits. When I have drinks with colleagues, I openly discuss:

Abortions Child molesting in the Catholic Church Incest Nancy Pelosi Hemorrhoids I brag about my sexual prowess in front of females After a few beers I bet everyone that I have the biggest dick at the table One at a time I ask everyone how much they make and laugh if it’s a low figure. I explain why women and gays can’t serve in combat
