Dumbest Question of All Time

I got a good laugh out of this.

(I stole this from M&I)

Basically I was reading through the comments on their resume article, and I see this:

"I do have a question about listing a certain type of leadership experience, which is a little out of the box and not really mainstream yet so I do expect some folks to raise their eyebrows at this.

Would it be bad or good to list MMO experience? Leadership in a top tier guild (officer status) for two years? I have noticed an article in a business mag (it was either Time or Newsweek) which said that jobs are starting to require on the fly adaptivity in leadership.

I would definitely consider leadership in MMO top tier raid/pvp experience as adaptive, and it does become difficult when leading 40, 50 or a few hundred people (in some cases) to success in some of these games these days. I would definitely say it is much more difficult than say “a quarterback” on a football team because you deal with many more variables which can go wrong at any time.

Variables can include communication, intelligence about the enemy, scouting, capabilities of your team vs theirs, how do you adapt in a fall, strategic placement, etc.

In case anyone is wondering, the game experience I am talking about is Eve Online."

The response from M&I was:

"DO NOT LIST THAT.

Seriously, do not list that under any circumstances."

Some people need serious help.

Haha that was unexpected. I got a good laugh out of that. Kudos... On the flip side however, I could see how being an avid MMORPG player encompasses skills that are normally valued in ibanking... such as being able to sit in front of a computer screen for an inordinate amount of hours... and staying up really late.... and doing tasks that may be considered repetitive.

Although not a question, the intern currently working with me I had asked to complete an assignment using the model I built. Told him, "please review your work and make sure it makes sense". He sends in his assignment (after my deadline) and turns out it is wrong. He then decides to go on that what he has is in fact right, essentially saying to me that the model I built was wrong...

But I proved him wrong. And, throughout the process, he showed much frustration, lack of attention to detail and an unwillingness to listen. So much for a full time offer, eh.

Is professional poker a valid input for the skills section? I mean, it does entail mathematical and probability skills, as well as reading and misleading others? Top-notch abilities right there.

O:)

I mean, the thing is, it's true that your average "top guild" leader probably has more leadership, organizational, and analytical capabilities than 99.9% of the population, but to tell the recruiter that you're putting ~10 hours+ a day into video games is probably a bad idea, lol. Shows you're putting your skills to stupid, stupid uses.

Part of it is also what's socially acceptable. I agree with the questioner in that it's probably more difficult than being say, captain of a sports team, as someone who's been captain of a no.1 in city HS lacrosse team, as well as a member of a guild in an mmo (quit that shit long ago xD, it actually is like having a job O_O not cool)

How about being a prominent member of the PUA (teen) community?
Would this be viable to put on a resume, it shows potential for client interaction, ability to negotiate, lead, etc.

It's funny that person considered that. It's sad that the industry would look down on the person if they put that. I doubt leading some of those 40+ member groups of people you've never met before isn't easy. People have to elect a leader and trust they do the right thing, whether it's fighting a dragon or leveraging a buy out. Both consumes other peoples time..although one deals will millions or even billions of dollars...and if you haven't guessed which one, it's not fighting the dragon.

Quit now, you will never make it.

Had to google MMO... this is pretty hilarious probably someone very desperate to put leadership on their resume I have a ton of leadership but certainly no time for MMO

This line cracked me up!

i like to keep "expert on every instrument - Rock Band (xbox 360)" at the top of my resume. shows my attention to detail and the fact that i can singlehandedly sell out shows while on tour.
