Energy IB in Houston

Interested in Energy IB specifically within Houston, have noticed most hires are from UT/Rice/SMU. Any insights on the recruiting process for these banks for a rising sophomore currently attending an out-of-state target school + diversity?

Pretty easy if ur Rice or SMU and UT Austin is full of hardos so it’s a bit harder ngl, saying that as someone from UT at NYC BB. Comp is the same. Col and taxes are nothing so you live like a king. Houston is okay. But what out of state target do you go to, if Vandy or Emory then ur good but I’ve never seen a northern kid in Houston and diversity is a boost.

Current analyst in houston and didn’t go to UT / Rice / SMU.

Big thing is to show a genuine interest in Energy. I do interviews for my banks summer internship and I can’t tell you the countless number of applicants who just apply because they struck out everywhere else. Energy IB is very niche and it is extremely easy to pick out who is just applying bc they want to break in to IB and struck out at their other banks / groups.

Also do research on the deals at the bank you’re hoping to apply to. Can’t tell you how many times someone has asked for a coffee chat to then express interest in a vertical my group doesn’t work within.

Like mentioned above, have a well-crafted story as to "why energy" - not some "people need energy, energy good" caveman philosophy (not saying that's what you have, rather a lot of what I see), but something more nuanced
