FP&A Lateral?

Hi! interned at an EB but didn't get a return due to headcount reasons, got good letters of rec and my VP even told me that if a spot opened up he would help me to fill it but nothing has come of it unfortunately. Have an offer doing FP&A at a decent sized tech company but was told by a couple of friends that lateraling back into IB is much easier if you are doing Corp Dev or Big 4 advisory. One even said that FP&A may make it impossible to break back in unless i get an MBA. Is this true? Anyone successfully lateral from a FP&A background? Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding transitioning from FP&A to Investment Banking (IB):

  1. FP&A Backgrounds and Transitioning:

    • FP&A backgrounds are diverse, and while it is easier to get an FP&A job with a finance or accounting degree, transitioning to IB from FP&A is not impossible. However, it might be more challenging compared to transitioning from roles like Corporate Development or Big 4 advisory.
  2. Importance of MBA:

    • An MBA is often seen as a "nice to have" rather than a necessity. While it can certainly help in making a transition to IB, especially if you don't have a traditional finance background, it is not the only path. Demonstrating strong performance and networking can also be effective.
  3. Alternative Paths:

    • If you are currently in an FP&A role, you might consider leveraging your position to transition into Corporate Development within your company. This could make the eventual move to IB smoother, as Corporate Development roles are more closely aligned with IB functions.
  4. Networking and Performance:

    • Networking remains a crucial element. Continue to build and maintain relationships within the industry. Your previous experience and recommendations from your VP can be valuable assets in your job search.
  5. Real-World Examples:

    • There are instances where individuals have successfully transitioned from FP&A to IB, but it often requires demonstrating strong analytical skills, industry knowledge, and a proactive approach to learning IB technicals.

In summary, while transitioning from FP&A to IB might be more challenging compared to other roles, it is not impossible. An MBA can help, but strong performance, networking, and possibly transitioning to a more closely related role like Corporate Development can also pave the way.
