FT S&T TO IB After 1yr or 2yr?

I've seen this kind of thread pop up a few times but would like to get a little more clarification from those who made successfully the transition from S&T to IB. I am going into a 2 year S&T rotational program with a BB in NY and was wondering if it is better to start networking to now to leave the role(be it with the same bank internally or externally) after 1 year? ..or would you guys recommend sticking it out for the full 2 years but networking 6 months before the 2nd year is up?

As a follow-up, any desks you would recommend that "might" have some transferable skill sets. I know equity research might have some modeling/valuation but that line of business falls into its own recruitment most of the time.

It's possible but becoming increasingly difficult. I myself did it as my desk head was very supportive and reached out to MDs in IB to endorse my move. This was a few years back. Now most that try to make the jump fail, perhaps 1 succeeds out of every 20 who try - at least internally, which is likely the easiest route to make the switch.

Using a headhunter and targeting boutiques is the most probable route of shifting tracks short of an MBA.

you haven't even started working...and you are already looking for the exit door?

S&T, for most people can be a full 20+ year career. The traditional exit....is to more S&T.

you have arrived....congrats...now is not the time to be looking for an exit...now is the time to try to make this a career. If, AFTER 1 year of work you think its not for you....THEN start looking to network. Anything else is too early to even think about. You don't know anything yet...wait until you do

Well he knows that he doesn’t want to do S&T. You’re being very short sighted in my opinion. Why would you advocate staying in a role that doesn’t interest you, and that you don’t see yourself in long term? Based on what you said in regard to the stickiness of an S&T position, I would advise to get out sooner rather than later. The sooner you leave, the sooner you can start your real career. Who cares if you piss a few people off? Such is life. 100% worth in to make the jump ASAP. Just my 2c

Would agree here if the person is just starting their career. S&T isn't what it was 20 years ago, but if you enjoy it and do well the lifestyle is worlds better than IB, and it's not like you're making Big 4 Audit money... but if your goal is IB, not a bad idea to keep your eye on the ball and do some networking to begin opening that door.
