Given the backdrop of surging violent crime in New York City, do you feel safe going back to the office when the office reopens?
Seems like the surge in violent crime shows no signs of slowing even as the city gradually opens back up and offices plan to reopen soon.
And for those who are living under a rock: 15 people were shot in NYC this past Saturday compared to just one person a year ago.
I feel very safe. As a matter of fact, I wish the NYC government would just disband the police so I can deal with killing the criminals myself.
*Chicago bankers have entered the chat*
Well maybe if all these white supremacists would finally stop attacking Asians and others then we could get some peace in this city.
Wow, just WOW. I see the WSO racists are out in full force this morning throwing MS. Look bigots, it doesn’t matter that nearly EvErY sInGlE AsIaN aTtAcK in NYC, and in fact an overwhelming majority of the violent crime in NYC and the rest of the country, is committed by 13%ers, it’s the fact that this country has a deeply ingrained white supremacy legacy that’s making them do it. I realize you rubes are too dense to understand how truly sophisticated and intelligent the “blame wypipo for everything” argument is, but why not read a book for once and finally leave your moms’ basements, Nazis!
You’re not serious are you?
Read this guys post closely. He just admitted that most crime is committed by non-white groups then said that white supremacy is what made them do it. So white people are what’s making black people attack Asian people.
Said it in a different thread but I’ll put it here for science: I’m genuinely convinced that liberals are not logically sound. It’s like arguing with an emotional child
Each time I reread this I get even less sure if it's a troll or completely serious hahah
Perpetuating falsehoods like this reminds me of Tyler Perry's great speech at the Oscars. We need to stop all hate that includes white racists, black racists, Asian racists, everyone.
To spread the myth that only one skin color is responsible for all racism, even with clear evidence to the contrary, is itself direct support of hatred, racism, and violence.
Start loving everyone and come join the middle!
It's not white people. It's black people. You're listening to propaganda.
I think this was supposed to be sarcasm.
Ding ding ding! I’ve been laughing all day about getting these clowns riled up.
don't make me say it
You do realize the majority of these attacks are perpetrated by non-white right? I've seen the stats around and when you reply to me freaking out I will pull them for you.
How do you know those attackers are white supremacists and not other groups of people?
Well there was a major uptick in hate crime during Trump’s presidency, which unfortunately has now lingered over to the Biden term. Clearly it wasn’t minorities doing hate crimes, that’s obvious.
Grabbed popcorn and ready for the comments
I recently watched Death Wish with Charles Bronson. Now there's a New Yorker who took a bite out of crime!
Does anyone think New York will ever go back to what it was in the 70s?
not any time soon
Realistically, every major city (LA, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, etc) there is a minuscule chance you could be a victim of a crime. Just don't walk around drunk at 3am and you will be fine. College aged girls walk around the city alone all the time in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
If you honestly feel that unsafe going back to NYC just switch to a remote job in the suburbs...
I suppose we can caveat that there is a minuscule chance you could be a victim of a crime in good neighborhoods in every major city
but perhaps Miami is unique in its crime
Condolences for your friend who was killed.
One of my best friends from school grew up in a rough area of Miami and his Dad would watch them go to the school bus and his wife go to her car holding a loaded .45 on the porch.
I could care less about my safety - but if saying I feel unsafe will get me out of having to go back to the office... then I will say that. I will say whatever it takes to prevent going back into the office.
Pretty sure they'll laugh in your face
Not sure about that. Companies usually take these concerns seriously.
I have a higher chance of getting into a serious car accident in my home town than I do of being the victim of a violent crime in NYC.
Hell, Dallas and Houston have higher violent crime rates on a per capita basis. I don't hear about how dangerous those cities are all the time.
Well, Dallas and Houston are more segregated, and more people are commuting by car. NYC is a lot more integrated and lots of people commute using public transit.
driving into the city from jersey using the Lincoln Tunnel i always get accosted by the homeless people begging (happens at 36th and 40th street entrance between Dyer-9th ave)...this weekend saw a group of 5-6 attack the car in front of me because the driver didn't want to pay the homeless guy who washed his windshield (uninvited) at the traffic light....the driver used his windshield wipers to try to get the homeless guy go away after just saying "no thanks" and waving him off didn't work...the homeless guy starts yelling that the driver hit him and then all his buddies swarm the car...took a minute for police to intervene. i hate driving thru that intersection.
What kind of post is this lmao go work in like any other city and see if it’s any different
It's just people that have lived in gated communities or rich suburbs their whole life afraid of exaggeration on the news
Untrue. I lived in New York for six years and I can tell you that New York now is not New York in 2019 or 2015
It is different in other cities, because other cities are more segregated and more people tend to commute by car rather than public transit
Yeah because I not a scared little bitch like so many people on this site. NY crime is nothing compared to most American cities. Grow a pair.
In other cities, people are more segregated and the commute of choice is driving, not taking the subway
OK don't really care, doesn't change what I said
Most people on this website can afford a minimum rent of $1,500. At that level, anywhere you rent is going to be safer than pretty much anywhere in the world. Its all about location - no one is saying brownsville is the safest place but I lived in the southstreet seaport, meatpacking, UES, and east village and at no point have I ever felt danger even when walking out the bars stumbling at 4am.
Maybe cuz you are a guy presumably with some build
Also, that “anywhere in the world” part is definitely untrue.
I don't think this post turned out to be what you were originally expecting when you started the thread.
Absolutely. A1 salaries are too low not to tax people in the stairwell of my office building.
I feel pretty safe, probably because I'm not an elderly Asian person. So no, I'm not worried about going back to the office.
Been in nyc this whole pandemic, and yes I feel very safe. In the west village area, no issues or concerns. Not sure what people are so concerned about, this is an incredibly safe city. While there has been more crime during the pandemic than previously, Manhattan, and the “nice” areas within manhattan are very safe.
Crime has been occurring in the nice areas of the city too.
Do you live in nyc? Yes crime happens in all cities, in nice and not so nice places. I had a friend robbed at gunpoint in palm beach, sh*t happens.
The question is around whether or not this is a huge difference relative to before, whether the trend will continue and whether nyc is a “safe” place to live.
Too often, people that don’t live in nyc watch the news and looked at these aggregated stats and think the world is on fire. NYC is a large place, even within Manhattan you have different pockets of areas that are pretty different. My comment is that the “nice” areas of Manhattan are still very safe relative to other major cities. Not that crime doesn’t happen.
I’ve lived here for over 10yrs and have a reasonable comparison point (and have lived in other major cities) and right now I’m not very concerned. If things continue to get worse, then yes, that would be a reason for concern.
OP must have been bullied in HS. Don't know anyone I work with (ex-women bankers) that would say they feel unsafe going back to work. Would ask HR if you could WFH for the rest of your career.
Not sure how one’s HS experience ties into this thread at all. That’s totally unrelated.
And just because no female banker has shared this concern with you does not mean that no female banker has this concern.
Also, someone’s at-work persona is usually just a facade.
Just stay home.
I'd be leaving my apartment and coming home after everyone's awake/asleep. Why would I be afraid?
Perhaps you haven’t been exposed to what’s been going on?
It’s a risky world out there… I think it's smart to take some precautions:
