Head of IBD Networking Questions

I'm a sophomore at NYU and I decided to cold email the head of IB at an elite boutique (Laz/EvR) for a informational interview after reading about him in a magazine. Somehow got through and set up a call with the assistant and when it came time to talk I had the questions i had used with other regular, younger MD's at banks prepared. I started with the usual how tell me about your experience and how you ended up at this particular bank and he immediately told me that the question was too general and could be found in the media. He explained that he was too busy to He told me to find analysts/associates to talk to and then to call him back with more serious questions. Basically, I want to know what some of you guys would ask him if given the chance? I was hoping to get to more thoughtful, unique questions later in our conversation, but what else is one supposed to start with?

I wouldn't read too much into it - maybe he was just having a bad day / really didn't have time (or he could just be a dick).

Sounds like he just wants to tell war stories. If you want to talk to him again, research some of his deals and (especially if there are ones where he looks real good) and talk about that.

Maybe a better question to ask yourself is what are you hoping to get out of this? In general the higher up you go, the less someone is involved with recruiting (and the most you can usually hope for out of a cold networking contact is an interview, in which case it's all up to your performance anyway). I would try to keep my networking contacts in the analyst - VP range, with some MD's as well.
