Yes and no, certain banks will take a look with strong networking but others will never give a fair shot. If you could get to a 3.45 and put 3.5 on the resume that would open a lot more doors (and that’s proper rounding). Leverage your alumni network, good luck!
Was in a similar spot as you except that I had a higher GPA during recruiting (3.6 rounding) and went to a complete non target school for banking but a top 15 stem school. In my experience, banks do tend accept lower GPAs for STEM majors when compared to finance/business majors. Reality is that the effort I put to get a 3.6 in engineering would translate to a higher GPA in finance. Banks do consider this despite conventional wisdom stating you need a high GPA irrespective of major. On the other hand, I would note that you need to demonstrate by your ECs and coursework that you have an aptitude and interest in finance and you need to absolutely nail the technicals. I feel like you are in a good enough spot that with enough networking and grinding, you should be able to land a position. Best of luck
Thank you very much for your insight.
My understanding is that consulting firms have a higher GPA requirement because recruitment is less networking based. Your interview selection is more dependent on your resume than demonstrated interest/personality/industry knowledge/personality.
If I were able to get referrals for all 3 firms would that help with getting an interview? I already have one for bcg
in your exact situation except for complete non-target, spending this upcoming summer at MM M&A group in NY. was able to get interviews at BBs/EBs/MMs through pure networking and having extensive IB internship experience.
my gpa was a 3.4 and most of the time they wanted to just know why you have a lower one, make sure to explain why stem gpa's are traditionally depressed and that you are on par with your peers in XYZ college of science, engineering, whatever.
where were you able to explain your low gpa? is there somewhere i can explain before i apply?
excellent, so given a good resume & semi-target status i should be able to get interviews. thank you very much
It seems like MMs are more willing to give you an interview if you have experience in place of a lower gpa. In my app there wasn't a place to give my reasoning but my interviewer asked me about it and asked follow up questions so be prepared to give a thoughtful answer.
during my interview, it would naturally come up. i would stress making sure to not going to fast over it but not spending too much time either.
Complete non target (school ranked around 60th in u.s news) ended up at JPM/MS, Non diversity, compsci and finance 3.3 gpa - purely through networking I was able to land interviews, and in interviews I made sure I was sharp and prepared
