HELP! Undergrad at non target NYC school

My biggest concern is finding work in the finance industry while completing my undergrad. It is daunting to try to convince employers that I'm the right fit or even get recruiters to work with me when they learn I am not done with my undergrad.

I am currently an 2nd semester freshman at a non target NYC college intending to major in finance and minor in economics.

I am fortunate to have been working full time as a contractor in the back office of a large investment bank for the past year, doing operations work. I take my college classes full time at night. (If wondering)

I had previously interned at another IB doing HR related work.

To make this post even longer.. because of my lack of confidence I thought I should seek FINRA licensing, so I am studying for the Series 65 for investment advisement (it's the only practical license that I didn't need sponsorship for) and as soon as the SIE exam is available I will be taking that one.

Also because I go to a non target school in NYC should I look for IB summer analyst opportunities out of state?

Thanks for your feedback!

First of all you need to learn to clearly explain your career goals and tell a story about yourself. If you come across to recruiters/interviewers as confusingly as you do here, you'll never get to where you want to be.

"Biggest concern is finding work in the finance industry" -- But you are, right now, working in the finance industry, FT in the back office of an IB. What you need to think and express: "I want a front office job in IB (or another finance job of comparable heft), after I finish my UG degree."

Now, you have 3.5 years to go of full time college work, so nobody is going to recruit you or even consider you for FT FO jobs, for the next couple of years. Your priority right now should be to ace your schoolwork at night while staying solvent working at your day job.

How can you go for SA roles out of state if you're working FT in NYC??? And why are you wasting your precious time taking the Series 65?

You know the odds are stacked against you for getting recruited for post-grad IBD FO roles. No need to give up on your dream just yet, but have a backup plan in case that fails. That could be the BO in IB where you are now, but it could also be many other rewarding and lucrative finance jobs outside of IB. You're in NYC. You're working your tail off in the equivalent of 2 FT jobs -- people respect that. Over the next 3 years you'll surely meet various people willing to give you a shot at a great job whether it's IB or not.
