How can I leverage being at an LMM boutique?

Folks, the die has been cast, and I´ll be joining a teensy-tinesy (20-22) boutique in a T2 city doing SME (consumer, industrials) deals for the forseeable future. My ultimate goal is UMM PE, and I want to get there with as much real life deal experience as possible. So how can I make the best of my time there? Should I try to pull my own deals in or focus on getting exposure from the partners, with whom I´ll be working closely? How can you network with UMM PE funds if you don´t do their deals, or only rarely? The other analysts have okayish CVs, but will of course know their shit far better, so how can I get an edge early on? Advice would be appreciated.

For anyone wondering, hours are supposed to be very manageable (think 60h during a crunch), and pay is below NY (duh), but acceptable.

Okay, how does lateraling work? Do you start as an A1 again or can you join as the respective level? Because I am kinda old and don´t want to effectively waste a year or two, even for the decent pay.

Ideally you should lateral in the first 6-9 months so that you are coming over clearly in the same class as the other first year analysts.  Do not wait more than a year to lateral.  Even if you do lose a year, it is worth it for the career prospects coming out of a top shop versus a regional boutique.  Forget about the pay increase, in the grand scheme of things it is a small portion of your lifetime earnings. It is all about positioning yourself for long term career prospects.

We´re talking about the class starting in Fall, right? That´d give me enough to get one or two deals onto my belt. How do you set yourself apart from other candidates who come directly from university?

I meant the existing AN1s about to become AN2s. If you lateral early enough they will all still be in learning mode and it won’t be difficult to be thought of as part of that class.  You wouldn’t be competing against incoming first years, but rather other laterals.  Need to have a good sense for your closed deals and the overall M&A processes.  Would also be prepared for technicals etc. in your interviews.
