How do MDs originate/source their deals

Im sorry if this is a dumb question im just a high schooler interested in finance.

How do MDs originate/source their deals?

And how do people below an MD (EDs, VPs) originate/source their deals in order to get a promotion to MD?

Thanks in advance.

Fair question. You don't just become an MD and are then expected to develop some kind of sourcing engine. You're promoted to MD because you have 15 years of relationships already accumulated. These relationships come from just working the job for years, meeting people, schmoozing/networking etc.
