How do people find longevity in this business?

The title basically explains it all - how do people find longevity in banking? Is it simply a matter of finding the right people who will sponsor you and help you move up the ladder? Or is it merely a case of endurance and hard work? Would love to hear some opinions from seniors, as right now it seems that without the right sponsors you'll lose the political game and get the boot.

 

The balance to find is i) being an above average performer but not too good of performer as you then get completely overworked and then ii) aligning yourself with MD’s that generate the most revenue and like working with
