How Smart Are Women I-Bankers?

So what is the honest truth, are the women i-bankers just as smart as their male counterparts or do you guys honestly believe a lot of them got in based on their looks and the fact that the MD wanted to bone them at the time?

Well, of course everyone knows that we women are somewhat lacking in the brains department. Most of us got in by blowing the MDs, actually. It's not as if we're actually the equal of the guys in banking or anything.

Of course, the fact that half the MDs in my group are women and actually drive more revenues than the men doesn't really matter -- surely they're only there for their looks. The men are only ones capable of true competency.

We've got some real winners on this board, folks.

Heh. Clearly you haven't seen some of the battleaxes in my group. You get a woman who drives deals and makes millions and started out fifteen years ago as an analyst and devoted her whole life to deals: she's not gonna be a pretty little girl.

Clearly, it is a miracle that 70% of my graduating engineering class was made up of women.

There must have been something in the water.

After all, remember the mid 1990's talking Barbie doll that said "Math is hard" ?

If Barbie said it, it must be true!

Just doesn't make sense Seanc. Is what you're saying based on statistical eyeball empirical evidence, i.e.

Smart = Ugly Dumb = Handsome/Beautiful

Do you assert this to generally apply to women bankers vs. men bankers? Or is this an umbrella statement of ALL bankers?

before i write my comment let me be very clear that I am not a sexist.

That said. I distinctly remember reading a research journal which actually said that the male brain was 4 times more competent at solving quantitative and scientific stuff than a womans...and a womans brain is much more spontaneous than a man's (that's why its hard to out talk a woman)...these are actual biological researches....I will try to find the paper and give you a link..

Don't do that... no need to get all sophisticated... a female colleague told me once her preacher explained the men/women difference in a MUCH simpler context...

Men are like waffles. They compartmentalize everything into "boxes"... everything in its place. Sex. Beer. Done.

Women are like spaghetti. Long strands of information and memory, don't forget any details, relationships are intertwined with everything else etc.

Simple, eh?

Shikhar, research journals are full of bizarre findings that may or may not be disproven in the next issue. For instance, back in the late 1940's there was a spate of research coming out of the nation's top institutions that "proved" that the Asian brain was far less capable and far less advanced than the white brain. Right now there's a ton of research out there that states that HIV cannot cause AIDS. There's research that says that birth control pills cause breast cancer, prevent breast cancer, cause ovarian cancer, prevent ovarian cancer, et cetera.

Let's not play the "I once read an article where they said...." game. We can all dig up articles that say exactly what we want them to say.

Impressive. Shikhar is busting out some "actual biological researches" that he thinks he heard one time. Straight baller.

You didn't by any chance hear them from a guy who calls himself "Dr. Science" and has his own show on public access, did you?

hot chicks get a free ride in life. nobody can dispute that. they ride the dick by marrying rich guys or they ride the dick in their field. id love to see a hot chick survive on a prop desk. women can be bankers because they basically ride the dick. who doesnt want to do a deal with a hot banker/consultant? who cares that the ugly guy next to her is more qualified. bottom line: chicks have it easy because they ride the dick.

I think the President of Harvard said something similar to what Shikhar is claiming and got hounded out of Harvard for it. The guy's a genius and they made him appear to be some kind of loony.

Read Charles Murray's book The Bell Curve to get a better understanding of this issue.

Well, the problem is that this type of stuff is extremely un-politically correct - so even if it's true and been proven in fact, you're not supposed to talk about it otherwise you're a "sexist" or a "racist."

I actually don't think there is a male-female intelligence difference..it's certainly not something we're seeing now. Women are starting to outnumber men in the US's elite colleges, and young boys are performing worse than young girls on regional standardized tests (I read an article recently, I think in the NY Times, about young boys diminishing performance). After the book you mention (The Bell Curve) was released, the American Psychological Association did a follow-up study due to all the controversy surrounding the book. They found that there was no male-female intelligence difference. They were unable, however, to explain the black-white intelligence difference.

The more controversial claim the book makes is about differences among the races in intelligence - that, based on IQ tests (which supposively, unlike the SAT or similar achievement tests, you cannot study for) the most to least intelligent races are: 1) Ashkenazi Jews very small gap 2) Asians small gap 3) Whites large gap 4) Hispanics small gap 5) Blacks

Anyway, just don't ever say anyone of this aloud or that you're a fan of that book. I did think the stuff I read from the book was interesting though.

Seanc:
So basically, never talk about the FACTs is what you're saying.

No, just never say anything negative about one protected class (race, gender, disability status, sexuality, etc.) even if the evidence suggests that it's true. It's just not politically correct, although I guess it's fine for an anonymous message board.

GameTheory:
I'm a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am. You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a third the size of us. It's science.

Who said this, really?

dav 3100 "male-female intelligence difference...."

I never said males were more "intelligent"..it depends on what you call intelligence...if you think that being good in science and math should only be considered as intelligence, then there is no point arguing further with you....however for others who care...i would say that intelligence is pretty much about excelling in any particular sphere of life....so though the article (not me, the article) claims that males had an edge in quantitative thinking, women had the edge in spontaneous thinking and verbal competence...so none is more intelligent than other...
