How to ask about group WLB?
networking for group placement now. I am someone who wants a group with good WLB. How do I ask bankers on calls without sounding soft? I am genuinely curious but would never want them to think I wouldn't be able to work hard because I know "good WLB" is relative in this industry.
Ask about meeting dynamics (Several check in meetings every day or is it more self-work with EOD/EOW deadlines), ask how many deals they are staffed on at once on average (how much pitching vs execution), how do they find new business (MDs relationship guys?), can also ask them what their favorite deal has been thus far. It’s not direct questions but it helps gauge the workflow and how work gets delegated
Find people who used to be in the group and ask them
Can ask in coffee chats indirectly by asking about dynamics and how the team works with other offices on cross border deals. Asked this once in a coffee chat and the banker I spoke to (without me asking) gave me a breakdown of their usual WLB / hours on live deals (domestically and internationally).
