How to tell if you’re doing well?

Hey all- first year analyst and with eoy reviews coming up, I can’t tell if I’m doing well. I’ve fucked up a few times but associates keep saying I’m doing a good job. I know I’m not really top bucket (maybe if they group by class not role). How do I go about getting more realistic and maybe criticism

Find the VP / Director with no life outside of work, usually an A2A but could also be a post-MBA with a bad marriage (always complains about his wife, who once you meet at the annual Christmas party you realize is a lovely person). They are usually the ones who have all the office gossip and spend way too much time hanging out with analysts. Just ask them about everyone else in your class (since they will never tell you the truth about you) and make an educated guess based on how your performance is perceived by the group relative to your peers.

This is a pretty important question given it'll play into your self-confidence and in turn your performance at work. I'm a big believer in following your gut instinct here. What I mean by that is if you've fucked up a few times and are still getting positive energy or vibes from your associates / vps, you will generally innately know that you're in a spot where you are being supported despite the errors you've made. But, and this may be controversial, you can generally get a feeling for when you have made enough fuck-ups to lose the interest or care from your associates to the point where they don't really bother getting mad or disappointed given you are a lost cause. Now, since you are self-aware enough that you are asking about this, you have likely just made some mistakes and felt bad rather than getting shade from the guys supervising you so I'd wager you're probably fine. A big part of this game is making sure you care and more importantly, optically showing that you care and acting on things which have created an issue for you. This includes things like not making the same mistake twice (fucking up is fine but seriously you can't do the same shit twice) and being proactive in seeking feedback in a non-intrusive way (this will develop as the relationship with your associates develops) so that you can demonstrate the heart is there.

If you're already in a banking analyst role, you're probably not a dumbass and need to remember that a lot of your success will be predicated on how you approach the job and the relationships you're able to build in order to solidify your standing with your colleagues. Basically continue being smart but make sure the optics within your team remain stellar
