Anyone know anything about HSBC's NYC office? Any information would be much appreciated. Specifically, what's the difference between the coverage and capital financing groups; are coverage groups more like corporate banking? What's the general environment like, career path, etc... I just got into the Analyst programming in London and I was wondering what the prestige of the firm's investment banking operations are like? I'll still take the job regardless, I was just curious where I sit on the 'league table' so to speak

Overall global they are 17th with 3.2% market share.
In Europe they are 16th with 5% market share.

This. Though in Europe, I think HSBC is on an up-trend while places like UBS, Nomura etc. are going the other way.

How big is HSBC's upwards trend though? After all they've been fined about 3 times in 2012 and still turned a hefty profit...

Everyone's getting fined. I don't think that has much to do with whether or not they are on an uptrend.

Coverage focuses on the relationships, capital financing focuses on the transactional work. RMs work in coverage and specialists work in capital financing. Coverage is denominated by industry/group (energy/mining/retail/etc.), capital finance is denominated by product areas (DCM/ECM/ABS/etc.)
