IB Analyst Lateraling After 1 Year
Is it possible/common to lateral as analyst after completing your first year? I know typically analysts are signed to 2 year "contracts", but I'm wondering if it's possible/common to lateral after only a year and the consequences associated with that. I know bonuses might come into play here. What would you need to do to make that happen? Thanks.
Yes it is quite common. You will likely need to forego your bonus for your first year though.
It’s common but your firm will likely cut ties with you. Seniors get mad when this generally happens but they’ll probably forget about you in a few days. I’d wait until you bank your bonus, if you leave before a year, you’ll lose your bonus and pay back part of your gross signing bonus.
i think a lot of BBs have 2 year bonus clawbacks for the analyst programs.. at least at Citi i think
I was a one-year lateraler back in the day...left a couple months after the bonus had already hit. Got a stern talking to from the group head but that was about it. I know the dynamic has changed since then though.
What did he say? I heard everyone who leaves gets a “You’re making a mistake. You can build a career here”
Lol it was almost like you were in the room with me 8 years ago based on that quote...that's exactly it. Also got a comment about how the group I was jumping to was not as good (which was definitely not true).
Would suggest leaving after the 1st year bonus hits the bank account. Knew someone in my class who gave notice like a few days before the bonus paycheck hit the bank account. Think he thought he would get it since we were already told verbally our numbers but if it's not in your bank account it's not yours yet and I think he was trying to give "two weeks notice" but if you are leaving for a competing bank you'll be let go that day. Anyways you probably will also have to give some of your signing bonus back if you leave before 2 years (at least that's how my bank does it)
I know someone who left after 6 months and returned his signing bonus. His new firm was nice enough to give him a full year's bonus though, plus an even higher signing bonus lol. This is a boutique that tends to pay quite generously though, so I guess it really depends on the firm you lateral to.
Do you know why he switched after 6 months? Seems pretty uncommon
Not the OP but I know a lot of people leave 9 months to go to hedge funds. When considering training and slow ramp up they are probably working for 6-7 months
