IB Intern - Received Return Offer

Hi Everyone,

I am currently interning at a boutique bank in Canada and received a return offer well in advance before my internship ends. I’ve been reaching out to so many people for advice on this. The bank is solid with amazing and seasoned management, really good people to be around and solid hours. Unfortunately I want to be in a group focused on infrastructure, industrials, and real assets. On the flip side, there really isn’t an opening in Canada and we can’t go to the US right now.

I was just wondering if I should accept the offer and try to recruit as a full time analyst even though we focus on marijuana deals - or if I should enter the job market. My fear is being pigeonholed to a certain industry/size of bank. If I’m applying for senior analyst roles will I not be competing with kids from other big banks looking to go to the same places as I do?

I forgot to mention that I have already graduated and the tile starts right after my internship.

Thank you

This seems like reason enough to start here.

FT at big banks is very competitive, happens quickly after internships end (so August-September 2020 for summer 2021 start) and you would likely not be considered having already graduated.

Lateral market is much easier assuming you have IB experience, as there are far fewer applicants. Those at big banks do not want to move around. That said, small boutique -> GS TMT is unlikely, and you may need to be open to a larger variety of banks if you want to move to the US depending on sponsorship/visa conditions. But if you have some deal experience and network you should be able to land something at a BB, EB, or MM after a year.
