It goes way beyond that. You need to do something exceptional while also playing partnership politics. Generate a few billion in fees/P&L then people will take notice. Being a top MD is great, but it's not what gets you to CEO. Also, at GS a MD is still not a partner. Firm politics is also 1/2 the equation, while revenue generation will get you noticed. I know 2 people who made partner before 30 at GS in S&T and both eventually left.
