In an economic downturn, what can bankers do to protect themselves?

Given the rampant speculation of a incoming recession and how far along we are in the economic cycle, would appreciate insight from those who went through the '08 Great Recession on what bankers should do to best prepare themselves to ride out a recession while staying employed.

Are bankers are boutiques safer than those at BBs? Or vice versa? What sort of jobs are available if the worst happens and you're cut?
