Intern not getting any work

Hi everyone,

About 2/3 of the way through my SA stint at an MM firm.

Work has ebbed and flowed over the summer, and I was given a very good mid-week review in which I was told I was more or less on track for a return but for the past week and a half or so I’ve barely been getting any work.

I made two minor mistakes on some excel backing but I feel like my analyst is beginning to get annoyed with me and that that’s the reason he isn’t giving me as much work now. On the other hand, he seems pretty busy in work that can’t really be delegated to interns. One phrase he said to me is stuck in my head: ‘you should really be getting this by now’. This also happened around week 2/3 but he continued to give me work and reassured me that every intern makes mistakes.

Other team members give me work but not as much, since it is normally my analyst who gives me work. They also seem generally happy with my standard of work.

It doesn’t feel right at all twiddling my thumbs being free so late into my internship. Is it over for me or is it just a slower period? Am I overthinking things, and if not, how can I make my analyst trust me with more work again?

I would try to grab coffee with another junior member of the team, float them the idea that you enjoyed the work you were doing before and want to keep helping out. Ask if there’s anything you can take off their plate or if they think there’s something that you need to learn/improve before you can take on more work.

Then, get coffee with the analyst that you think there might be a problem with and have the same conversation. Also never hurts to mention that you made a mistake before and you have taken x action to make sure it doesn’t happen again and you’re open to whatever other feedback they have
