International student could not get an offer for SA2021, next steps
Hey monkeys,
Bad situation here. I am an international student at a target and I could not find an offer for next summer. I had a nice Soph SA (not BB/buy-side) but IB firms doing over 50MM deals. I don't know why for sure, but now I am without an offer.
What other jobs besides IB sponsor international students? Sorry for not knowing, but I was hoping to get something...
Bump
I doubt any BB, MM, or EB are sponsoring right now for this coming summer. With the pandemic, I would focus instead on applying to internships where you live, as I doubt anybody will be sponsoring people due to covid-19.
Sorry but you don’t know what you’re talking about. Several internationals landed SAs at BBs/EBs/MMs for 2021, and banks won’t stop sponsoring because of COVID (the banks that still sponsor, that is). OP should apply everywhere right now, in the US and in his home country, but spreading disinformation is harmful
I was referencing as far as timeline right now everything is wrapping up for SA 2021, there might be a few gag roles left.
Lol love people commenting on stuff they don’t know shit about.
Internationals don't need to be sponsored for internships and can even work 1 or 3 years after graduation without sponsorship (depending on whether they had a STEM major).
possibly big4 or other boutiques that don't sponsor, then try again for FT
my recommendation, and this is what I did, is to find a name-brand internship in your home country and then re-recruit for SA22. I got a big name brand internship at home and then re-recruited for SA21. Ended up with a top group. It will give you a serious leg-up over others.
that's good advice, thank you!!
If you can live with an assignment outside of finance I'd just start searching for them and apply directly. Other industries may be more open to off-cycle recruitment and may also sponsor.
yeah, that's what I was wondering. What other industries do sponsor?
consulting
Tech is the big one, OEMs, healthcare, telecoms, consulting, etc just google and get in touch with people to figure out what they want. As an example, Tesla regularly sponsors visas for people. It combines a good brand, cars and tech and is a great one on a resume.
and, they all should have finance roles if you want to stick with the topic. also strategy.
Hey - stuff like that happens, sometimes you just don't get lucky. I know it's not for everyone, but is there any possibility you could take a gap year and re-apply for SA 2022? Then you could use the gap year to take on some finance internships (paid ones, preferably with a big name, maybe in your home country?) and with the extra experience you'll be way ahead for next year's SA recruiting. Just some thoughts!
