Is it possible to go into IB from NYU Liberal Studies Core?
Didn't see any posts on this so I thought I'd ask everyone. NYU LS Core automatically enters you into CAS Econ if you wanted to after 2 years so the degree you get is Economics and if you wanted to go to Stern you can also try to transfer in after your second year, but that is not guaranteed.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, breaking into investment banking (IB) from NYU's Liberal Studies Core (LS Core) is possible, but it comes with challenges. Here's what you need to know:
Transition to CAS Economics: After completing the LS Core, you can transition into CAS Economics. However, CAS Economics does not have the same placement strength for IB as Stern. Placement into IB from CAS Econ is significantly weaker compared to Stern, and CAS students often face tough competition from Stern students during recruiting.
Stern Transfer Option: While transferring to Stern after two years is an option, it is highly competitive and not guaranteed. If you manage to transfer, your chances of breaking into IB improve significantly due to Stern's strong alumni network, targeted events, and better access to on-campus recruiting (OCR).
Breaking into IB from CAS Economics: It is possible to break into IB from CAS Econ, but it typically requires:
Challenges: CAS Economics students do not have the same access to Stern's exclusive IB-focused resources, such as roundtables, seminars, and networking events. This makes it harder to stand out during recruiting.
Alternative Pathways: If transferring to Stern is not an option, you can still succeed by:
In summary, while it is possible to break into IB from NYU LS Core (and subsequently CAS Economics), the path is more challenging compared to being in Stern. If IB is your ultimate goal, transferring to Stern or excelling in networking and internships will be critical.

It is but you need to network a lot and have a good story
And by good stories, what kind? do you have examples or general ideas? Thanks!
Why you chose liberal studies, why should they pick you over a finance major at Wharton, Why IB, etc
Anything is possible! But need to have a clear story and reason for why finance and ib.
You’ll need to do a ton of cold emailing as well to expand your network. No resume from nyu liberal studies is getting picked up without a connection lol
False
False?
have seen some pretty killer (albeit sparse) placements from LS, but not sure if they were nepo or not.
It's possible but it really depends what other schools you're weighing it against. Stern alums will be focused on the tidal wave of Stern alumns emailing them. Internal transfer will be very competitive and recruiting is done at the end of sophomore year anyway.
If you're strong enough to get into NYU you should have plenty of semi-target options that will have easier pipelines for you
