IS Undergrad GPA considered for buyside/lateral recruiting?
I'm a junior at a target(Ivy) that is joining a BB this summer. Since I am taking harder classes now that I have my offer, my GPA is going to dip a little.
I was just wondering if GPA matters down the line. Specifically, do I need to keep my GPA up for buyside recruiting or lateraling? Some people say no one cares about your GPA after your first job, but I'm not sure if that is true in finance where people change jobs frequently.
Also, business schools have lower median GPAs that I would've expected. Is that because they value story/GMAT/work experience more than undergrad GPA?
Thanks!
What's your GPA now and how much do you expect it to fall?
Depends on the fund; some funds don't really care while others will have hard cutoffs (heard 3.85 for a few), obviously with most varying in the middle where it matters (not as much as group, or maybe school though) but a 3.5 or 3.6 isn't a deal breaker assuming everything else is strong
Is SAT score on the same level as GPA, in terms of reasons to ding someone?
I am curious as to which funds are more stingy about the GPA cutoffs (3.8+). I would assume the more pedigree focused ones (H&F, Berkshire, probably most of the MFs).
I definitely think knowing which ones will allow analysts that don't have those numbers to look elsewhere and not waste their time.
Think the first two are correct. Ironically a lot of Mfs don't care as much since they interview so many candidates, they can cast a wider net. Growth funds also tend to be less focused on pedigree.
They will definitely care, but its not as big of an impact. Additionally, B schools are a bit less competitive than undergrad because they aren't always required and are almost $200k for 2 years. Thats doubling the debt with no guarantee of a job. Try getting a 750+ on the GMAT too. Its not so easy.
Why do people always say harder classes -> lower GPA? Dont you have control over your grades? Or is choosing a harder class like filling up more slots of a revolver before you go Russian roulette on your transcript?
