No, only healthcare has some in house modeling, JPM is fundamentally run with coverage as relationship bankers and product as execution bankers. Not as close with SF M&A team as I work with NY M&A more but know they are slightly better with facetime/WFH freedom and you’ll be getting cranked regardless

Well if you’re sitting in SF they only have tech and healthcare there so that’s what you’ll be doing. NYC M&A you’re generally sector agnostic but will tend to specialize in a few industries due to staffing/experience/MDs

Would you mind clarifying what relationship banking vs execution banking is? Is it that coverage bankers don't do much modelling and that's largely done by the product teams?

Yes. Think exactly that, the coverage MDs are the ones who have the real “relationships” with clients and CFOs so are main points of communication thruout lifecycle; whereas the product guys build the actual models that determine terms/prices.

Simple analogy is think a company wants to make an acquisition ; coverage MD who has been close w the company helps win the mandate & they pick the universe of logical targets, while M&A builds the models that shows what price they can buy these companies at and executes the actual deal

No im a first year right now but I’m planning on trying to lateral once I hit analyst 2

Yes networking frowned upon by HR. They will be opening official applications on the website for laterals so keep an eye out

appreciate the help!

Lean team with great people, no strict facetime culture which is nice and bonus/TC higher than other JPM SF groups. Hours are pretty average and I’d expect them to be on the better end also considering the new 80hr/wk cap. Does majority of the deal work with SF Tech coverage and some with Healthcare.

So does SF tech do modeling within group? Also, how are exits like for JPM M&A vs Tech?
