Junior who's kind of scared what to do at this point, advice? No internship offer, target school.
Basically, I'm a guy who's reasonably good at math, but elected only to take Calculus AB in high school for a couple of reasons, and so for my own sake I decided not to major in Economics when I got to college. I'm a junior who's majoring in a humanities liberal art, at a HYP, with a 3.6 GPA, which will probably go up to a 3.7 by the end of this semester, as I'm doing very well in all my classes. My work experience is pretty lackluster, just private wealth management.
With that said, I am in a tough situation. I struck out with BB IBD recruitment entirely, didn't get a single interview, partly because I was applying a bit late to the process, so that ship sailed. So, I cleaned up my resume, applied to a lot of places, and got rejected from Point72's internship program after making it to a final round. Desperate for something, I applied to the MBBs, got an interview at one of them, made it to the second round, and then got rejected, but I'll probably apply again full-time.
More recently, I just had a final round interview with a good REPE firm, established really good rapport with the analysts and associates and talking to them went really well, but the interview with one of the main Managing Directors, who told me he mainly makes the hiring decision, was kind of awkward and wasn't convinced I was actually interested in real estate, even though I had really good, well-articulated answers as to why. So I sense an impending rejection.
So now I'm in the spot where I don't know what to do exactly. I'm thinking, over fall break, I'll just apply to 100-200 positions at F500 companies, try to work at a F500 company for the summer. Does this seem feasible for someone with my qualifications? And then I'll try to go for consulting full-time after studying cases over the whole summer.
The way I feel now, is that I'm just worried that I won't have a job. Like, at this point, I'd just be happy with anything that gives me enough salary to live on in or near New York City or another major city, and decent pay increases with seniority.
Anyone have any advice?
Keep hustling and apply like crazy. There’s still plenty of good opportunities up for grabs.
Applying to a million internships is like playing the lotto right now. You might hit but online portals are black holes. Get on LinkedIn, find the right ones - there are still many out there. Find the recruiters and figure out their email addresses. Apply AND email them directly. You may feel annoying (because you probably are) but they won’t overlook you just because you emailed them directly. Got an internship interview with a top consulting firm this way. Also, don’t forget about family shops or investment firms that may not have anything posted. If you see an interesting firm shoot them a well crafted email about why you’re interested and if they are/will consider an intern. Be creative. Takes more time but your response success rate will be much much higher. (From experience I know this strategy works)
