You have to get to know someone at the companies. Randomly applying is mostly a waste of time. Find a senior level alumnus who works at or works in the industry locally in Atlanta on LinkedIn. Reach out to them. Meet for coffee or lunch. They will know tons of other firms and people you can reach out to. Just meet with a plan to state what you want to do in Finance.
Thanks, but my problem is that I'm about to go back to college and in all likelihood won't be back in Atlanta until the summer.
I disagree that randomly applying is a waste of time. I was also in a non-finance hub city early on in college and just emailed as many wealth management firms I could find with my resume attached, saying that I was interested in finance and from the area.
Sent ~40/50 emails, got 4 interviews, accepted the first offer I got.
Yes, reaching out to alums is the best bet but don't be afraid to cold-email people.
How do I find the email addresses of people in BB PWM branches in ATL? Is there a standard bank email address format?
Yes, there's a standard format...but it's generally firm wide and not differentiated by location. Use LinkedIN. Click on companies that you know have offices in Atlanta, then add a search parameter of "greater Atlanta Area" under location. You may also want to add a keyword search for "Private wealth" but generally speaking that list will be small enough that you can find people in PWM by browsing your search results.
Also no it's not too late. The structured BB, IB recruiting process is mostly over but a lot of smaller firms are still recruiting, or don't start until January. Plus there's a lot of one off opportunities at BB firms that pop up outside the regular recruiting timeline.
Other thing to keep in mind is that it may be tough sell as a freshman, which is also true of any off-cycle internships such as trying to do a pre-MBA internship or a post-graduate internship. Firms generally prefer to use their internship slots on candidates are able to accept full time offers for the next year. If you're really dedicated be prepared to have a plan B, meaning either be open to working for free with a small firm or doing something interesting like a summer study abroad...which will do a lot more for your application than you think it will. It does wonders to have some conversation starter bullets in your resume.
Also I've noticed you keep mentioning "BB PWM." Don't limit your search to just that. Reach out to smaller firms/family offices as well. Plenty of places have a couple billion in AUM that are still going to be worthwhile positions to have especially as a freshman.
I second this. Smaller RIAs would be a good look, even ones who manage less than 300mm. The experience and learning curve would be steep.
I would also look at Schwab and Fidelity. There's also a family office called HomrichBerg. Also look at GV Financial Advisors.
