just wondering
Hey I was just wondering, for the people that work in ibanking have any of you had a terrible first semester gpa in your Freshman year but was then successful in raising it in time?...I don't know I guess I need some motivation because I received not terrible but very mediocore marks first semester C+ Stats, B+ Management and B Business History. I go to a non target school when it comes to the NY firms so a strong gpa will really be crucial at this point.
You have lots of time but you basically need to go mistake-free from now on to have a legit shot.
I think my first semester Schulich grades were worse than yours. I pulled them up before the end of my fourth year, got into consulting and then transferred to a boutique IB. If you're smart, you'll succeed in 3rd and 4th year when the class size is smaller and the courses are more focused. Think about it this way: "Management"? How do you define that? It's a very broad subject with very broad course material. Those who succeed in these courses tend to do so mainly by luck and because they were able to write an essay, under time pressure, that met the TA's own personal view the best. I wouldn't worry too much until I get into 3rd year or so.
Unfortunately, Schulichites aren't heavily recruited to US BBs (they tend to come from McGill or Ivey). I think it's great that you know what you want to do already because you can focus on going after some of those internships at Canadian BBs (Scotia Cap, TDS, RB Cap Mkts, BMO Cap Mkts, CIBC WM) which will set you up with good experience that will increase your shot at going full-time in the US.
You definitely can recover. Basically need at least a 3.5/3.6 GPA on your resume when you start looking for an internship. Specific courses won't really be looked until you are in front of the interviewers.
alright thanks for all the input guys. ValueAdd I'm curious when did you graduate from Schulich? I'm glad to say things are changing these days when it comes to Schulich's strength in Finance. I personally know of people in fourth year who got jobs in American BB ex. Morgan, Merril and a couple people that interviewed with Goldman a while ago. As for the Canadian banks they all recruit, I'm not saying we'l catch up with Queens and Ivey over night but its gonna happen especially with students in my year who are all fighting for internships already.
I think maybe a couple years ago accounting was Schulichs strength and there still strong in that but things are changing, the majority of people especially in this new batch of first years are interested in Finance.
