Lateral from MM PC

Currently an AN1 in vanilla PC at a mid sized fund. Was wondering what are viable options to move to if I see myself not wanting to stay in credit long term. Are lateral moves to IB easy to make if I want more optionality? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Lateral moves from a mid-sized private credit (PC) fund to investment banking (IB) are possible but can be challenging, especially if you're aiming for a top-tier bank. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights:

  1. Challenges in Lateraling to IB:

    • Transitioning from a non-IB or non-transactional role, like private credit, to IB is often an uphill battle. Banks typically prioritize candidates with direct IB or transactional experience due to the competitive nature of lateral hiring.
    • For example, if a bank like JPM posts a role, they will receive applications from BB, MM, and boutique bankers with relevant experience, making it harder for someone from a private credit background to stand out.
  2. Strategies to Improve Your Chances:

    • Internal Transfers: If you're at a bank-affiliated private credit group (e.g., BofA Energy Credit), internal transfers to IB are more feasible. Networking within your organization and demonstrating your interest in IB can help.
    • Rebranding with an MBA: If lateraling directly proves difficult, pursuing an MBA from a top program can help you rebrand and position yourself for IB associate roles.
    • Networking: Building relationships with bankers in your target groups is crucial. Use LinkedIn, alumni networks, and industry events to connect with professionals who can advocate for you.
    • Technical Preparation: Be prepared to demonstrate your technical skills and knowledge of M&A deals during interviews. Given your private credit background, you'll need to prove you belong in IB by excelling in technicals and showing a strong understanding of the industry.
  3. Alternative Paths:

    • If IB isn't immediately accessible, consider roles in corporate development, valuation, or internal M&A at your current firm or elsewhere. These roles can provide transactional experience and serve as a stepping stone to IB.

While the move to IB is not easy, with the right preparation, networking, and possibly an MBA, you can increase your chances of making the transition.
