Lateral Prep
I'm looking to lateral in the summer after a full year at my current bank. Culture isn't great and I'd like to get out of LevFin and move to a more M&A focused role.
I'm in touch with people at other banks, but haven't started actively asking about openings, especially given the current job market. So, assuming the job market opens up a bit in the summer, how early should I be actively asking about openings and general recruitment?
I wouldn't pop the question until end of summer/fall. Banks are still cutting and the lateral market is closed. As someone looking to lateral myself, how did you make approached to folks at other banks? I assume they can read between the lines but curious how you made your approach/planned it out.
Honestly I plan to be entirely straightforward but not overbearing. I would never directly ask anyone for a referral, but I'll ask about their bank's recruitment efforts and note that my plan end goal is to lateral, so I'm trying to expand my network (backup for if they aren't hiring).
Do you not worry about it coming back to your current bank? Assuming you don't have your group in your LinkedIn.
Not too worried. From what I've heard, our senior team members don't really care if you leave as long as you get your shit done prior to leaving and given the lean deal teams, I've developed a decent rapport with a couple of them.
