Lateral to NYC - Networking Advice
Hey all,
Long time poster here, using a throwaway account for anonymity. I'm a first year M&A analyst at a top MM in a regional city. As we get closer to summer, I have started taking a serious look at second year analyst lateral opportunities in NYC. For those that have gone through the process, what kind of networking strategy is the most effective here? And what are some things to keep in mind regarding timing and the interview process?
Any help is much appreciated.
I went through this process last year (not to NY, though). Take a look at my lateraling guide. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Solid guide. More specifically, how do you tactfully reach out to analysts/associates and bring up the topic without jeopardizing your current position? And given that I want to jump late summer, does it make sense to look for opportunities now, given most will be for immediate start?
I would not reach out to analysts. I had good luck with associates and above. You will not jeopardize your current position. Start by reaching out to your existing network to put some feelers out there. Then, apply for positions like I suggested in my guide. It's unlikely that you get a lateral offer right away, so it would be good to start now.
Bumping this up
Hey guys, quick question. Is most of the lateral activity expected to happen this summer? I've heard conflicting reports from contacts, some say now, others say summer. Just to get a sense of the process
I saw an uptick in available positions around the summer time last year, but with the way the market has been, lateral positions might be close to non-existent this year.
Best way to lateral network? (Originally Posted: 07/22/2014)
I work in MM IBD in Chicago and am angling to get a BB/EB IBD position in NY. My firm has a small presence in NY now but I'd rather jump to a bigger shop. I got my current position through extensive networking as a university student, so how is networking for a lateral different? Should I be more explicit with what I want, or do I need to be more subtle? Do I reach out to people with my work email or personal email? Is there a guide or article written on this already?
